- What is a fraud alert?
A fraud alert is an alert that will let a credit issuer (like a credit card, mortgage, cell phone or insurance company) know that you are concerned that your identity may have been compromised or could be compromised. Any time someone requests credit in your name, the issuer is alerted to call you to verify that you have applied for credit. If it is legitimate, you authorize it. If not, the identity theft is prevented!
- Who calls me to let me know that someone is attempting to access my credit?
The credit issuer will call you directly.
- After 90 days my Fraud Alert will expire. How am I informed that it will expire?
Fraud alerts expire every 90 days and must be renewed. freeIDENTITYprotect will alert you to reset your Fraud Alerts before they expire. To do so, check your Dashboard for when it changes from "Enrolled" to "Action Required". You will also receive an email reminder from freeIDENTITYprotect.
- What is a preapproved offer of credit?
Many companies that solicit new credit card accounts use prescreening to identify potential customers for the products they offer. Prescreened offers, sometimes called "preapproved" offers of credit, are based on information in your credit report that indicates you meet criteria set by the creditor. These offers are often stolen from your mailbox by identity thieves and used against you.
- Will the Reduce Credit Offers service end all credit card offers?
Unfortunately not. All preapproved offers should stop within about 6 weeks. This will reduce the chances of the offers being stolen from your mailbox and used by a thief. You still will receive credit card offers, but they will be applications to apply for credit, not preapproved offers.
- Does enrolling in the Reduce Credit Cards Service affect my ability to apply for credit?
No, enrolling in this service does not affect your ability to apply for or obtain credit or insurance.
- Does enrolling in Reduce Credit Card Offers improve my credit score?
No, since inquiries for firm offers for credit are not used in calculating credit scores, enrolling in this service does not improve your credit score. Similarly, inquiries for firm offers for credit or insurance do not reduce your credit score.
- How long does the Reduce Credit Card Offers service last?
You are registered for 5 years. At that time, you must renew. Check your dashboard for status updates and email notifications.
- What is the National Do Not Call Registry?
The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home or on your cell phone. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. You can register your home phone, cell phone and fax number on the list.
- Will the Reduce Telemarketing service end all telemarketing calls?
Unfortunately not. You will continue to receive calls from those companies that do not use the Federal Trade Commission's Do Not Call list. They are in violation of the law if they call you. Tell them to put you on their Do Not Call list. You may also receive political related calls.
- What is the DMA email opt-out list?
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) provides an email preference service. This service allows you to opt-out of receiving email marketing from companies who use the service.
- What happens after I add my email address to the list?
When you register, your email is placed on a "do not email" file which is made available to companies that use email for marketing purposes. These companies that use the do not email list will no longer send you email.
- Will the Reduce Junk Email service end all junk email?
Unfortunately no. You will continue to receive email from companies with which you do business and from charitable or commercial organizations which do not choose to use this list. In addition, you may continue to receive email from many local merchants, professional and alumni associations and political candidates. There are also many individuals who do not adhere to best business practices and do not remove people who do not wish to receive unsolicited email before sending emails.
- How often can I review my credit report?
Reviewing your credit reports on a regular basis is important in preventing identity theft. FreeIdentityProtect links you to the three national credit bureaus to provide you access to a free copy of your credit report from each bureau once a year. You are only allowed one free report per year from each credit bureau. FreeIdentityProtect notifies you once every 4 months that it is time to review one of your three credit bureau reports.
- Should I order all my credit reports at one time or space them out over 12 months?
You are entitled to receive one free credit report every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies. It is entirely your choice whether you order all three credit reports at the same time or order one now and others later. The advantage of ordering all three at the same time is that you can compare them. (However, you will not be eligible for another free credit report from the Central Source for 12 months.) On the other hand, the advantage of ordering one now and others later (for example, one credit report every four months) is that you can keep track of any changes or new information that may appear on your credit report. Remember, you are entitled to receive one free credit report every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting agencies — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. freeIDENTITYprotect will remind you every 4 months via the dashboard and email which report to order.

- Will my credit score be affected by using this service?
No. Your credit score will not be affected at all by using this service.
- Can I obtain my credit score through this service?
You can receive one free credit report per year from each bureau each year as part of the service however, your credit score in not included. By law you may obtain one free credit score a year but you have to initiate the request through the credit bureaus yourself.
- By using this service will it be harder for me to get credit if I need it?
Adding fraud alerts to your credit report will notify the issuer to call you on your phone to verify that you have indeed applied for credit. If yes, you approve the transaction and obtain the credit. If not, your identity has been protected! This extra step of verification will take a few extra minutes, but we feel the protection is well worth your time.
- Am I safe from Identity Theft if I have credit monitoring?
Credit monitoring only informs you after accounts have been opened in your name. It's old technology and does nothing to prevent identity theft. freeIDENTITYprotect helps you Set Fraud Alerts which helps prevent the accounts from being opened in the first place!
